Karinto (Candied Strips)

 

Dough:

1 small egg

1/4 cup water

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon sugar

1-1/2 cups flour

1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder

Syrup:

3/4 cup brown sugar

1/4 cup dark molasses

1/4 cup water

Make a stiff dough with the above ingredients. Roll out thin (1/5”) and cut into strips 1/4” x 1-1/2”. Drop one by one into deep fat. Fry rather slowly until crisp, and drain on paper towels.

In a large saucepan, cook syrup ingredients of brown sugar, dark molasses and water until syrup spins a thread from edge of spoon.

Put fried strips into syrup and quickly mix until every piece is coated with syrup. Dry on waxed paper.
