Portuguese White Bread

5 pounds sifted flour

1 cup sugar

1 tbsp. salt

1-1/2 cups shortening

l cup warm water

Yeast mixture:

2 pkgs. dried yeast

1 tsp. sugar

1-1/2 cups water (luke warm)

 

Dissolve yeast and sugar in lukewarm water and let rise. In big pan, put flour, sugar, salt, shortening, and add yeast mixture. Knead and knead until spongy. Use warm water occasionally while kneading. Pat dough with flour, cover well and let rise until three times in size. Make into buns or loaves and let rise 2 times in size. Bake at 350 degrees until done. Use shortening to glaze.
